Salary Packages (All-Inclusive)

• Medical Officer Grade 1: R1 001 349 per annum
• Medical Officer Grade 2: R1 142 553 per annum

Minimum Requirements for Department of Correctional Services Medical Officer vacancies 2026

• Basic medical degree (MBChB or equivalent)
• Applicants must be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Practitioner and comply with all national healthcare regulations.
• Computer literacy
• Valid driver’s licence (not applicable to applicants with disabilities)

Experience Requirements Department for Correctional Services Medical Officer vacancies 2026

• Grade 1: No experience required
• Grade 2: Minimum of 5 years’ experience after HPCSA registration
• Grade 3: Minimum of 10 years’ experience after HPCSA registration

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide primary health care services to inmates
• Render basic and emergency medical services, including after hours
• Improve clinical quality through mentoring and supervision of health professionals
• Provide medico-legal services
• Ensure compliance with Standard Treatment Guidelines and the Essential Medicines List
• Coordinate medical emergency preparedness and life-support services
• Refer patients to authorised health care providers when required
• Participate in administrative and clinical meetings
• Manage performance information, human resources, finances, and assets
